HISTORY

  • The large white was developed in Yorkshire during the 19th Century
  • The first herdbook was published in 1884
  • By the end of the 19th century the breed was attracting a great deal of interest
  • With enterprising breeders exporting stock world wide.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS

  • Size- large(sows): 260-300kg. (Boars):350-380kg
  • Looks: a large, lean white breed with distinctive pricked ears
  • Uses: indoor and outdoor pig production
  • Litter size: decades of recordings show that the average litter size is 11-12 per litter

MEAT PRODUCTION

  • The large white is renowned for bacon production.
  • There is the flexibility within the breed to allow farmers to send pigs to the
  • Slaughter house at a range of weights.
  • The breed is well conformed with little fat suited to supermarket
  • Or processor requirements.
