The Last Supper with Jesus

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. (John 13:1)

8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."
9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked.
10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'
12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there."
13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. (Luke 22:8-13)

Thursday was the First day of the Unleavened BREAD. Everyone would of cleaned their home and swept the floors to get rid of all the yeast that was usually used to make bread.

Untitled Slide

It wouldn't of been hard for Peter and John to find this man carrying a water jar because he would of been the only one. This was considered to be a womens job.

There would of been thousands of people gathering to their families homes in Jerusalem to prepare for this feast. For no one was to celebrate outside of the city walls for the Passover.

Triclinium

(tray-klin-ee-uh) three sided table
As Jesus and the twelve entered the upper room they would of saw a table like this. A triclinium (tray-klin-ee-uh) table.  It was three sided table for reclining on for meals. This seating arrangement was only usually found in the wealthy homes that could accommodate many guests.

Last Supper

Leonardo Davinci's
This is a little different from the common  Last Supper picture we are familar with in Leonardo Davinci. In this famous portait we see daytime in the back ground. The Jews would of prepard the last supper at night. The portait shows dining on a table with chairs while during Jesus's time they adopted the Roman dining to recline. The portait shows bread rolls and fish when the last supper had to be without yeast so  the bread would of been unleavened bread and the sacrificial lamb.

Untitled Slide

The disciples would of come in with Jesus taking off their sandals by the door seeing the water jars for ceremony cleaning of the arms and hands as they approached the reclining table.

Untitled Slide

There was a proper seating arrangement around the table. The u shaped table faced the door of the upper room. They would of come in talking amongst themselves who was the greatest so they might sit at the honor seat.

Untitled Slide

No one would of wanted to sit on last seat on the right side because if there were no servants to serve the meal the last one seated near the water bowl on the right side of the table would of been responsible for the foot washing as they reclined.

Untitled Slide

Jesus the host would of  sat second on the left and would of told the rest where to sit. We know from the bible that at one point John leaned on to Jesus's chest to ask him who would betray him so he sat on the first seat on the left side of the table. He would of been the protector of the host because he would of faced the door and he could lean back against the host and protect him incase of intruders. The guest of honor on the left side of Jesus would of been Judas Iscariot the one who would betray him and share the sop with him.

Untitled Slide

The last seat on the right was Peter because of his reluctance to have his feet washed by his Lord and because in this position he would of been able to get John's attention and motion to Him and get him to ask Jesus who would betray him.
So after Jesus told where they were to sit they would of reclined on their left side with their head and shoulders nearest the table and the dirtiest part of their body their feet would of been furthest from the table.

(Under a lot of emotion and strain for this evening.)
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." (Luke 22:14-16)
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." (Luke 22:17-18)

In pronouncing the blessing by the host, the cup of wine, which afterwards was passed around the table to each participant in turn, this was the customary manner of the begining of the supper. This was the cup of santification where God brought the people of Israel out of Egypt and of their burdens (Exodus 6:6,7)

We learn from the scriptures that passover was usually observed with your own family. The picture above shows a family sharing a Passover meal in their home. During this solemn meal Jesus appears to observed some of the Passover essentials and procedures but it was not recorded on all of them. There seemed to be so much Jesus wanted to share with his beloved disciples besides the beginning observances of the annual feast.

There were further causes of sorrow to Jesus at the supper. Some of the twelve were mumbling and were probably upset with the seating arrangement and who was seating in the guest of honor seat.)in the scriptures
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was consider to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  (Luke 22: 24-30)

The rich and the Kingdom of God

The first shall be last
Jesus was reminding them they had  been taught before; yet even now in this late hour they were filled with vain and selfish ambition.  The Lord knew if they would prove and remain faithful they would be appointed thrones and judges of Israel in the kingdom of heaven. The Lord had no less feeling than that of love, and a yearning for their victory over satan and sin. Jesus seeing there attitudes taught them the greatest lesson of all as his last time with him.

2. The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
(He would of started with John and worked his way to Peter.  Jesus was going to show the full extent of his love by being humble as a servant even washing the one who would betray him, Judas's feet.) John 13:2-5

Untitled Slide

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
(Peter only saw this as a act of service, a personal comfort to be clean, he failed to see at first what The Lord was providing in humble humility, love for his brother in him.)
9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"
10 Jesus answered, "Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. (John 13: 6-11)
(Everyone earlier would of gone through baptism with John the Baptist before becoming a follower of the Lord. They only needed the feet to be cleaned while reclining. This Is what Peter had refused to do as the lowest position  at the table. )

Untitled Slide

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place."Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (John 13:12-17)

Untitled Slide

18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: 'He who shared my bread has turned against me.'
In earlier versions in the King James this scripture also meant "He who shared my bread has lifted his heal against me" Which  now we know that would of been disgraceful, being that was the dirtiest part of the body. Also it was like a mule or a horse who kicked up there heels to hurt.)
19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.
20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." (John 13:18-20)

Untitled Slide

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me." (John 13:21)
(The diciples looked at each other)
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely you don't mean me, Lord?"
23 Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely you don't mean me, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "You have said so." (Matthew 26:21-25, Mark 14:17-25)
( Judas might have said this, just like the others so it wouldn't of drawn attention to himself)

Untitled Slide

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."
26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
(John 13:22-26)
(Jesus would of blessed and broke the bread. And then he would of taken the broken bread and dipped it in the haroset and put it in the mouth of Judas, the seat of honor.
This was a special moment in jewish tradition, when Jesus broke and shared the bread with the person on his left, he was showing how much he cared for them, that if you had any differences with him, he would forgive you and he honored you, He would lay down his life for you. Everyone would of wanted this seat to have this special and honourable treatment.)

Untitled Slide

( The  Charoset, the sop or the dipping bowl for the bread was a paste mixture of bitter sweetness made of fruits  and nuts and spice to remember of the mortar that was used between the bricks in Egypt.) It showed love in Jesus's heart in bitter sweetness that he was forgiving his betrayer.

Untitled Slide

27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly." 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
(John letting us know it was night was also another symbol of dark being evil and there was no light in Judas)

Untitled Slide

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:27-35)

Untitled Slide

While they were still eating,
19 Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." (Luke 22:19)
(Jesus would of broken the bread in half and given the one half to the rest of disciples to divide and eat. Symbolizing they were half of the whole.) Jesus was transforming the Last Supper as they had always experienced it and was creating a new institution for a new covenant.

Untitled Slide

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26:27-28)

Untitled Slide

Only a few weeks ago they had witnness Jesus saying the same thing to the crowd that appeared to them after feeding the five thousand. " I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the widerness, yet they died. But here is  the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone can eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which i will give for the life of the world." (John 6:48-51)

Untitled Slide

In this manner The Lord has invited us to his table in rememberance of him.  for the Apostle Paul said,
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. (1st Corinthians 11:23-26)

Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, he was buried and raised...1Cor.15:3,4

Come in remembrance of me!
