What is the law of sines?

Real world problem
Jenny wants to measure the height of a tree. She walks exactly 100 feet from the base of the tree and looks up. The angle from the ground to the top of the tree is 33 degrees. This particular tree grows at an angle of 83 degrees with respect to the ground rather than vertically (90 degrees). How tall is the tree?

DON'T break the rules!

  • Don't use the wrong angle with the wrong side.
  • Don't use it on right triangles only oblique.
  • Don't mistake the law of cosines for the law of sines.
  • Only use the formula for the law of sines.
