LESSON 1:

CHANGES DURING ADOLESCENCE

PUBERTY

  • Adolescence: the period between childhood and adulthood.
  • Physical growth is one of the most noticeable changes during this period.
  • Children grow, their voices change, and their bodies begin to fill out.
  • Puberty: the time when a person begins to develop certain traits of adulthood.
  • Puberty usually happens between the ages of 12 and 18.

PHYSICAL CHANGES

  • The most significant body change is the development of sex characteristics.
  • The reproductive cells are gametes. Males produce sperm and females produce ova.
  • In Females: breasts develop, waistline narrows, hips widen, body fat increases, and menstruation starts.
  • In Males: facial hair appears, voice deepens, shoulders broaden, muscles develop, hairline recedes.
  • In Both: body hair appears, all permanent teeth grow in, perspiration increases.

MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL CHANGES

  • As your body goes through dramatic changes, your brain changes also.
  • Cognition: the ability to reason and think out abstract solutions.
  • Adolescents become capable of solving problems in more complex ways.
  • Most adolescencents begin to search for meaning, personal value, and sense of self.
  • Mental and Emotional developments can be tied to physical changes.

SOCIAL CHANGeS

  • Friends become a major part of a teens social experience.
  • You explore new interests through a variety of classes and extracurricular activities.
  • You'll make new friends and meet new people from cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Stong friendships begin when people realize they share similar goals, experiences, and values.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN ADOLESCENCE

  • Emotional and psychological independence.
  • Personal value system.
  • Vocational goals.
  • Control over behaviors.

LESSON 2:

ADULTHOOD, MARRIAGE, AND pARENTHOOD

MATURING PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY

  • Physical maturity: state at which the physical body and organs are developed.
  • Emotional maturity: state at which the mental and emotional capabilities of an individual are fully developed.
  • Emotionally healthy individuals have positive values and goals.
  • Relationships with peers, family, and friends can positively effect ones physical and emotional health.

STAGES OF ADULTHOOD

  • Young adulthood:19-40 years old
  • Middle adulthood: 40-65 years old
  • Late adulthood: 65-death

MARRIAGE

  • When a couple agree that marriage may be in their future, the relationship is more serious.
  • Commitment: a promise or pledge
  • Marital adjustment: how well a person adjusts to marriage and to a spouse.
  • Successful marriage include: communication, emotional ability, and shared values and interests.
  • In most states, it is illegal for a couple to marry before the age of 18 without parental agreement.

CONFLICTS IN MARRIAGE

  • Differences in spending and saving habits.
  • Conflicting loyalties involving families and friends.
  • Lack of communication and intimacy.
  • Jealously, infidelity, or lack of attention.
  • Abusive tendencies or attitudes.

PARENTHOOD

  • Adoption: the legal process of taking a child of other parents as one's own.
  • Involved parents will teach children that each individual is responsible of ones successes and failures.
  • Parents with a strong value system may pass these aspects of life on to their children.
  • Self directed: able to make correct decisions about behavior when adults aren't around to enforce rules.
  • Another responsibility is providing children with unconditional love; love without limitations.

TEEN PARENTHOOD

  • Becoming a parent at any age is a challenge especially as a teen.
  • Consequences may be: financial problems
  • Restrictions on education or career plans.
  • Emotional stress.
  • Limitations on social and personal life.

HEALTH THROUGH THE LIFE CYCLE

MIDDLE ADULTHOOD

  • Middle adulthood is the stage of development that spans from age 40-65.
  • Transitions: critical changes that occur at all stages of life.
  • They experience physical, mental, emotional, and social transitions.
  • Empty nest syndrome: the feelings of sadness when children leave home and enter adulthood.

LATE ADULTHOOD

  • Late adulthood begins at age 65.
  • They review their lives and if they lived their life with integrity, the are satisfied.
  • People who remain committed to a system of values throughout life will also are satisfied.
  • The social security program provides benifits to to older adults and people with disabilities.
