  • She was born June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, AL
  • She died peacefully in her sleep at Westport, CT June 1, 1968
  • She was 87 years old when she died

Childhood

  • She went to Perkins School for Blind
  • Her teacher was Anne Sullivan

Adulthood/Career

  • She was never married
  • She was engaged to Peter Fagan in 1916 and when the day came he was gone
  • no kids
  • She wrote books about her life

Challenges

  • She got a bad disease called braille bug and went deaf and blind
  • She had to learn Braille which is a language for deaf and blind people
  • She had to learn to read, write, and speak despite of her disability

Accomplishments

  • She went to a college as a deaf and blind girl
  • In 1964 she got an award for Medal of Freedom
  • She had to learn that things had names.
  • Her first word was water 
  • Because Anne took her to get water and spelled it out in her hand

  • SMART: because she learned Braille. 
  • BRATTY: because she stole things from others
  • STRONG: because she never gave up learning

  • She learned 5 languages LATIN, FRENCH, GERMAN, BRAILLE, and ENGLISH
  • She visited 39 countries in her life time
  • She was the first deaf/ blind person to earn a college degree

Why do we remember her

  • We remember her because she fought for women's rights 
  • Also for people with disabilities  
  • She made wonderful progress in learning
  • She could read and write yet still blind and deaf
