THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON ROBERT OWEN

  • Robert was born in Newtown, Montgomeryshire on May 14th, 1771
  • He was the 6th of 7 children
  • He attended a local school where he developed a passion for reading
  • His father was also named Robert Owen, who owned a small business as a saddler and ironmonger
  • He was a socialist

EDUATION

  • Owen received almost all of his education, which ended when he was around 10 years old

GOALS & AMBITIONS

  • He moved to London and began working in a large drapery business.
  • By the time he 21, he was a manager in London at the Chorlton Twist Mills
  • In 1793, he was elected as a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society
  • He also became a committee member of the Manchester Board of Health
  • He married Caroline Dale, the daughter of David Dale, who was the mills proprietor of New Lanark

  • Owen was also part of the purchase of New Lanark, so he became manager and part owner of the mills
  • He developed the basis of cooperative shops in Britain that continue to trade today by
  • He was the founder of infant child care in Great Britain, which was most popular in Scotland
  • He wrote 4 essays which expounded on the principles that explain his education philosophy
  • In 1824 Owen crossed the Atlantic to go to Indiana and bought the Rappite Community at harmony

  • He embarked a new settlement at Queenwood Farm in Hampshire

  • Owen is mainly known for New Harmony
  • He hoped to create a utopian socialist community
  • He based it on the sharing of property and work
