Mexico had to combat Native Americans in order to fully control Texas.
Soon, American and Mexican settlers called Tejanos invaded Texas,

Mexico offered land grants called impresarios to Americans.
The purpose was to encourage the Americans to settle in Texas.
But, the Mexicans had to convert to Catholicism.
These US settlers were called Anglo settlers.

Austin of Texas
Stephen F. Austin was the most famous impresario.
Austin was great politician and offered many land grants.
For the Anglo settlers, Austin was their leader and spokeman.

Austin's effect
Word spread of the opportunities in Texas.
Americans were able to start fresh in Texas.
Its wealth spread through the region.
President J. Q. Adams offered to buy Texas, but was denied.
President Jackson offered even more money, but he was denied by the Mexico.

The American settlers in Texas had finally surpassed the Mexican settlers.
The region began to speak more English than Spanish.
Mexico wanted to abolish slavery, but American Texans fought to keep it.
This sparked a revolution.

Mexico closed the borders of Texas from American.
Mexico tried to impose trading posts and tariffs.
Mexico was under command of their President.

Before the Violence
Austin was sent to Mexico City to consult with Santa Anna.
This attempt of a diplomatic solution failed.
Austin was imprisoned by Santa Anna
After Austin's imprisonment, Texan rebellions began.

The Alamo
American settlers fortified an old Spanish mission.
People such as Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie were present in the Alamo.
Greatly outnumbered, the Alamo fell to Santa Anna.
Santa Anna made sure that no American soldiers survived.
The Alamo is in present day San Antonio, Texas.
