WHAT WAS THE LOST COLONY?

  • The Lost Colony was a settlement near Dare Country, North Carolina that suddenly disappeared around 1587-1590.

WHY WERE COLONISTS IN ROANOKE?

  • They were there because it was Queen Elizabeth 1's attempt to establish the first English colony in North America.

KEY PEOPLE

  • John White, the governor of second colony.
  • Arthur Barlow, founder of first colony.
  • Sir Ralph Lane, commander of first colony.
  • Harriott, a scientist sent to do work on Roanoke

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM?

  • The first colony ended in disaster when the Natives were angered by Sir Ralph Lane. Everyone was murdered by the Natives.
  • The second colony disappeared during the three year period when John White left to gather more supplies.
  • No one knows what happened to the second colony.

WHEN AND WHERE WAS ROANOKE FOUNDED?

  • Roanoke was founded in the 1580's.
  • Founded on modern day Dare Country, NC
  • First colony was founded in 1580-1581.
  • Second colony was founded around 1585.
  • In 1590, John White returned to Roanoke to find it deserted.

THEORIES

  • Everyone left the settlement
  • The whole population was killed by disease
  • Village was destroyed by a violent storm, such as a hurricane
  • The colonists decided to live with the friendly Natives of a nearby island
  • Everyone in the village was murdered by angered Natives

A FEW FACTS

  • Trees that were near the colony indicated drought
  • The first New World child born was in Roanoke. Her name was Virginia Dare, John White's granddaughter
  • There were actually three groups on Roanoke, but only two tried to colonize.

ARTIFACTS

  • An ax head was found near the settlement when a swimmer stepped on it.
  • A well was discovered close to the water during a dig.
  • Rectangular objects were found buried underneath several feet of sand. Believed to be remnants of Harriott's scientific work
