Background of Lusitania

  • The Lusitania was a British ocean liner
  • This boat was launched on June 7, 1906
  • The Lusitania was owned and operated by the Cunard company
  • At the time of her launch the Lusitania was the world's largest, fastest, and most luxurious ocean liner

The Lusitania was traveling from New York to Liverpool, England on September 7, 1915

The Sinking of the Lusitania

  • The Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine on September 7, 1915
  • A German Submarine launched a torpedo hitting the ships starboard side
  • Around 763 people survived the sinking while 1,197 people perished
  • The Lusitania was carrying over 73 tons of munitions for Britain
  • The Lusitania Sunk in just 18 minutes
  • The British told the Lusitania to be on the look out for German submarine and try to change their route to avoid the Germans but they did not

Results of the War

  • The US cut relations with Germany
  • The sinking of the Lusitania was known as the cause for the US to join World War 1
  • Once Germany continued unrestricted warfare, and a submarine sunk the US ship Housatonic the US declared war on Germany

My Reaction

  • I was interested about how the Lusitania played a role for the US, and learning about how the US was brought in to WW1. And I liked the challenge of using this new site for my presentation
