PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Mark of Athena

By: Rick Riordan            Presented By: Maddie Toles

Annabeth Chase

Resilient

"Everything seemed to be in order. Even that mysterious chill she'd been feeling since the ship landed had dissipated, at least for now."
(2).

"She forced herself to move. Still trembling, she stumbled outside. The ocean air helped clear her mind."
(249).

"There was another problem with calling for help: this was supposed to be a solo quest. If Annabeth did get rescued, she'd be admitting defeat."
(424).

Theme

Always believe in yourself

"Annabeth was tempted to tell her about more recent problems: her fight with her mom, the gift of a silver coin, and the nightmares she'd been having- about an old fear so paralyzing she'd almost decided she couldn't go on this quest." (40).

"The open sea was supposed to be his territory, Percy was supposed to step up, take charge, and keep everybody safe."
(352).

"Wisdom's daughter walks alone." (405).

Author's Purpose

"Kill the Romans, she heard her mother urging. They can never be your allies." (251.)

Riordan often makes remarks about the Romans, making it seem like he doesn't like them. He makes most of the Greek demigods hate Rome and he makes it obvious that the Romans are violent and rash.

"And we've got to hurry. The Romans are in New York. Soon, they'll be marching on Camp Half-Blood." (573).
Again, Riordan shows an attack from the Romans on the Greeks. He makes them sound violent and unreasonable because their solution is to always fight.
