The Mentor

Aids or trains the hero; represents the godlike qualities within us
Examples?

An effective Mentor may be an otherwise inane, inept or foolish character but he/she has or knows just what the hero needs
Examples?

Gives a gift to the hero. The gift may be food, weapons, knowledge, magic or power
Examples?

May be the Hero's "backbone", strengthening him when he is weak or providing encouragement
Examples?

He or she has extensive experience with the unknown world and passes on what he or she can to the hero for the journey
Examples?

Often times the hero finds the mentor to be a nag and he/she (and the audience) doesn't realize the worth of the Mentor until the climax
