Vocabulary

  • Hierarchy- governing body, and the strict observance of all of the Church's rules and practices
  • Millennium- one thousand years.
  • Muslims- followers of Muhammad
  • Schism- a division

EMPEROR CHARLEMANGE

He was crowned the leader of the Franks by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day 800.

The Reform

  • Immediately began a reform that included the defense of Christian doctrine
  • He did not distinguish between Church and state
  • He saw politics and religion as the two halves that formed the Empire
  • Realized that Christianity could bind his empire together
  • Launched a program of reform that included the defense of Christian Doctrine

Contribution to Education

  • Decreed that all monasteries should open schools to everyone
  • Encouraged monastic libraries to preserve and copy ancient manuscripts
  • Appointed a monk to set up a school for religious studies

Muslims

  • Conquered much of the Middle East
  • Were seen as a threat to Christianity
  • Conquered many Christian areas

Deepening Division

  • growing political and cultural differences between the eastern and western
  • This clouded the unity in faith
  • In 1054 a schism took place between the eastern and western parts of the Church

  • Those that lived in the east are now part of the Eastern Catholic Church
  • Today the Catholic Church consist of 22 Churches
  • The Roman Catholic Church (west)
  • 21 Eastern Catholic Churches
