Life in the Middle Colonies

School

  • Went to church schools instead of regular schools
  • Kids were needed to help with crops so school was out during planting and harvesting ccles
  • Taught religion based on which church school they attende

Homes

  • Tall,Narrow ,and made of brick
  • Beds were built into the wall like cupboards
  • Some homes had leather chairs
  • Fireplace was decorated with blue and white tiles

Towns

  • Many were market towns.Places were others went to buy and sell goods
  • Central location of the Middle colonies led to the development of major ports and cities later on,including New York and Philledelphia

Clothing

  • Dutch girls wore full red skirt
  • Dutch boys wore long baggy pants,red stockings,beaver caps, and a shirt

Kids

  • Kept very busy
  • Collected stones for stone fences
  • Collected berries
  • Helped with farming and harvesting
  • Helped their mother make candles and clothes
  • Had a lot of homework
  • played tag
  • had fun staking
  • Played with balls,bats,marbles,and dolls
