DIAMETER OF THE MOON
The diameter of the moon is 3,474 km across the diameter of the earth is 12,742 km across
that means the moon size is roughly 1/4th the size of the Earth.

VOLUME OF THE MOON 10 3
is 2.195 x 10 km that sounds like a huge number but its actually only 2% the volume of the Earth in other words you could fit 50 moons in the Earth.

SURFACE AREA OF THE MOON
the surface area of the moon is 37.9 million square kilometer. How big is that ? Just for comparison. The surface area of Asia is 44.4 million square kilometers. If you could unwrap the moon it wouldn't quite fit inside Asia.

WHAT IS THE TEMPERATURE ON THE MOON
The temperature on the moon varies from -387 degrees Fahrenheit (-233 Celsius ) at night , to 253 degrees Fahrenheit (123 Celsius) during the day , Because the moon has no atmosphere to block some of the suns rays or to help trap heat at night its temperature varies greatly from day to night.

HOW MANY CRATERS ARE ON THE MOON
No one knows how many craters are really on the moon there could be billions even trillions of craters on the moon.

CRATER SIZES
Craters form at all sizes or on objects with out an atmosphere on the moon this goes from the gigantic south pole - Ait Ken basin that's 2,500 km across and 13 km deep to tiny micrometeorite craters called "zap pits" that can only be seen under a microscope in the samples returned by Apollo.

COMPOSITION OF THE MOON
The composition of the moon is a bit of mystery although we know a lot about what the surface of the moon is. Here's what we think the moons made of.

THE MOONS CORE
Like Earth the moon has layers the inner most layer is the Lunar Core it only accounts for 20% of the diameter of the moon. Scientists think that the Lunar Core is made of metallic iron with small amounts of sulfur and nickel, Astronomers know that the core of the moon is mostly molten.

LAYERS OF THE MOON
Out side the core is the largest region of the moon called the mantel the Lunar mantel extends up to a distance of only 50 km below the surface of the moon. Scientists believe that the mantel of the moon is largely composed of the minerals olivine, orthopyroxne, and clinopyroxene. Its also believed to be more iron rich then the Earths mantel.
