These are a sample of answers I received from my 9th grade students at the end of first semester after I asked them to answer the following prompt "What was the most valuable/important lesson you learned in first semester of World Cultures?"

We are lucky here in the U.S. we have necessities that to people in Africa would mean the world if they could just hold it and we take it for granted.

The world is worse than I thought. I always knew I was lucky to live in America but I didn't realize bad it was in places like Africa.

Not to worry about First World Problems, this class let me see the horrible things happening in our world, and it let me see how privileged we are.

...I mostly learned that I can actually enjoy a class and look forward to it because I definitely look forward to this class in specific.

I don't feel I learned any type of life lesson during this first semester of World Cultures...sorry.

Not to rely on technology for your grade. Sometimes listening to a person or reading a book is a better option. Also sitting quietly in a room where I can brainstorm with other people is horrible and I hate doing that.

Being completely honest I learned the violence that I tend to favor is nothing compared to peace.

Keep an OPEN mind while learning about different cultures and ways of life. It is important to respect other people's cultures because it is very important to them.
