• Established by Turkish warrior Babur, strengthened by Akbar
• Akbar granted land revenues & expanded into Hindu and Afghan territories
• Maritime trade boomed but the Mughals did not develop their own navy
• In turn were forced to rely on European merchant fleets

• Hindu principalities offered little resistance
• Violence between Hindus and Muslims created deep divisions
• Akbar attempted to reconcile Hindus and Muslims
• -Married a Hindu Princess
• -Reduced taxation against Hindus
