Atoms

Elements are made of atoms and are the building blocks of matter.

Every substance has a combination of observable characteristics called properties

A substance's properties can be used to identify it or help us understand how it will behave under different conditions

Physical properties are
properties you can observe or measure without changing the basic structure of the substance

Physical Properties include

• color
• hardness
• density
• melting point/boiling point

Chemical properties are
properties you observe during reactions that change the basic structure of the substance

Chemical Properties include

• flammability
• toxicity
• reactivity to water or air
• radioactivity

A Physical Change is when
a substance's particles are rearranged, but their basic structure is not changed

EX: cutting, breaking, melting

A Chemical Change is a change that results in the formation of new chemical substances and the breaking of chemical bonds

EX: burning, corroding, reacting
