THE NAVAJO

Shelter

• The Navajo lived in hogans made of wooden poles and sticks reinforced with mud and stones
• Hogans had no windows, one tunnel doorway, and one room.
• The Navajo lived in the Southwest along with the Mojave, Hopi, Paiute, Zuni, and many others.

LANGUAGE

• The Navajo people spoke Algic or Athabascan
• They called themselves Dine which means the people
• Many tribes called them raiders or takers of the field
• The Pueblo word Navahu means planters of huge fields

ARTS AND CLOTHING

• They were skilled in weaving, pottery, jewelry making, and much more.
• Men wore knee high moccasins and breech clouts
• Women wore sandals , and a type of dress called biil, a large shawl with a large slit in the middle.

TRAVEL

• The Navajo mainly traveled on horses after the explorers arrived
• Before the Europeans came, the Navajo used a travois pulled by dogs.

FOOD

• The Navajo ate the 3 sisters, melon, and wheat a lot.
• Breakfast included tortillas & mutton stew
• Their main meals often included vegetable or potato stews.
