THE HISTORY OF THE NILE RIVER

  • The river got its name from the Greek word Neilos, which means valley.
  • Egypt’s population has depended on the Nile for thousands of years.
  • The Egyptians have rightly termed it as the "river of life", since it has given life to land.

THE CATARACTS

  • They are all located in the southern part of of the Nile.
  • They are rapids or either waterfalls that are difficult to pass by.
  • They would build pathways that would allow small boats to pass.

THE TWO MAJOR TRIBUTES OF THE NILE

  • The two major tributes of the nile are the white river and the blue river.
  • They meet at Khartoum, Sudan.

FUN FACTS

  • It is the longest river in the world.
  • The drainage basin of the Nile covers about one tenth of all of Africa.
  • The Ancient Egyptians called the Nile, the Great River.
  • Only 22% of the river passes through Egypt.
  • The river flows mainly through an area of desert.
