  • Early 1800s
  • Farms turned into factories
  • Divided into three phases

PHASE 1

  • 1800-1820
  • People started working together to make products
  • Main product produced:
  • Grain and cloth

  • 1840-1860s
  • People start building machines
  • To do some of the work

  • The inventor of the sewing machine
  • 1846
  • Helped produce clothing on a large scale

  • First reliable steamboat
  • Easier, cheaper, and faster
  • 1807

  • Very fast ships
  • Could make journeys two times faster
  • Traveled from New York to California in 90 days

RAILROADS AND CANALS

  • Many railroads and canals spread through the U.S.
  • In 1840s over 31,000 miles of railroad

EARLY LOCOMOTIVES

  • First locomotives very important
  • Broke down often and went slowly
  • Could take people around the U.S.
  • First ever one lost in a race with a horse (Tom Thumb)
