PRESENTATION OUTLINE
THE CICONES
Odysseus and his men were brought to the cicones and some of his men attacked the village, the villagers that survived went back and got their army and attacked Odysseus and his men. Odysseus's crew lost 6 men per ship.
THE LOTUS EATERS
On the island of the lotus eaters there is a plant called the lotus, once you eat it you loose hope of wanting to go home and want to stay on the island. Some of Odysseus's men ate the lotus and Odysseus had to drag them back to the ship and they continued on their trip.
THE CYCLOPS
A cyclops traps Odysseus and his men in a cave and they stab the cyclops in the eye. They escape on the bellies of the ram, after, the Cyclops prays to Poseidon to not let Odysseus have an easy way home.
ISLAND OF AEOLUS
Aeolus, god of the winds, gave Odysseus a bag of bad winds to help him get home safely. His crew disobeys orders and opens the bag.
LAESTRYGONIANS
Gigantic cannibals live on this island and all of the ships are destroyed and the crews are devoured except for Odysseus' s.
THE ISLAND OF CIRCE
They came upon the home of Circe and sent twenty three men to explore the island, Circe finds them and turns them into pigs. Odysseus goes to Circe's hall and Hermes gives him a plant to weaken Circe's power. Circe sets Odysseus's men free and persuades Odysseus to stay with her. After a while Odysseus and his men ask how to go home so Circe sends them to see the prophet Teiresias.
THE LAND OF THE DEAD
Odysseus seeks to learn his destiny and Teiresias is his source of information for it. But first he has to bring him back from the dead. Once Odysseus brings him back he tells him about what's going on at home.
CIRCE'S ISLAND
Odysseus receives a warning about three obstacles he is about to face.
THE SIRENS
These are lovely women who if you hear them sing you will fall into their trance. Odysseus gets his men to tie him to a pole so he can hear their singing, while the other men put beeswax in their ears to block out the singing.
SCYLLA AND CHARYBDIS
Scylla is a twelve legged and six headed monster who preys on sea animals. On the opposite point of the strait is Charybdis, a whirlpool who sucks down ships to the bottom of the ocean.
THE SUN GOD (HELIOS)
Odysseus tells his men to not eat the suns god's cattle, but his men sacrifice them and eat them while Odysseus is sleeping. Zeus punishes them by bringing a storm that drowns all the men except for Odysseus.
CALYPSO'S ISLAND
Odysseus is being held by Calypso, a beautiful goddess, for seven years. Then Athena got Zeus to help Odysseus by sending Hermes to Calypso to order her to release Odysseus. Calypso promises Odysseus a raft and he leaves the island but Poseidon makes it a difficult trip and Odysseus lands on the island of Scheria.
THE LAND OF THE PHAEACIANS
Odysseus is found by the daughter of Alcinous, the King of the Phaeacians. That night Odysseus is a guest at court. All guests are treated as god sent, so Odysseus asks for a song about Troy, which is a song about himself. When the King asks Odysseus who he is, he then tells them of his stories while trying to get back home.
