Quote that represents Theme of story

"Stay Gold, Ponyboy, Stay Gold." (Page 148)

The theme of this quote is to stay true to yourself, and don't change based off how others change.

In "The Outsiders," there were many times Ponyboy demonstrated staying true to himself. One time this happened was on page 45, Ponyboy states, "I couldn't ever cut anyone...." This shows that Ponyboy is staying true to himself because even though all of his gang wouldn't hesitate pull a weapon on a Soc, Ponyboy just couldn't no matter how hard he tried. He never wanted to hurt anyone, he just wanted to make peace between the Greasers and Socs.

Another time this happened was when Ponyboy busted an empty soda bottle, and picked up the glass once the Socs fled. He was being himself in this situation because even though his peers would just leave the glass, Ponyboy thought that it would be bad if a car ran the glass over.

To continue, one other time Ponyboy didn't believe in the Soc vs. Greaser rivalry. For example, when the Greasers were calling a kid a Soc, Pony said defensively, "He ain't a Soc, he's just a guy," (page 118) which was brave because he speaks for himself even around rougher, tougher guys.

Something that nobody else did as a Greaser except Ponyboy, which was good to have, was that he cared about others more than himself. Even though everyone else cares about themself, Ponyboy dares to make others feel better. For example, he ran into a flaming building to save kids, even if he could've hurt himself.

Finally, unlike most Greasers, after having killed Bob, Ponyboy wasn't afraid of any Socs that threatened him. For example, when a few Socs hopped out of a car and threatened to hurt him, he just told them to get lost, so they did. Most Greasers would panic when they saw Socs, but Ponyboy doesn't.

One way I can connect to this is when my friends are doing something that is not right, I should not go along with it, but should tell them it is not right. This is being true to yourself because you are doing what's right, not what everyone else is doing. In conclusion, I would tell them not to, and if they don't listen, i would just walk away.

Another time that this comes up would be when others are whering something that is not comfortable for me, and that I should where what i think is comfortable. When this happens, I will keep in mind that it is okay to be myself.
