The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is about two groups of boys that live in 2 different communities. They
absolutely despise each other and get into fights just about everyday.

There are multiple reasons as to why they loathe each other. However the main reason is because of their differences. One group has a wealthier life while another group is like a family. What they don’t realize is how much they are truly alike.

One thing they have in common is that each boy wears a mask around their friends, and deep inside is a completely different person. One boy could look like a really tough kid who doesn’t care about anyone, but deep inside is just a little boy who got hurt so many times that he is scared to get hurt again.

“He couldn’t take it........Johnny was the only thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone. So he finally broke “
(Hinton 152).

Each boy also thinks that they have it worse. One kid is abused, another is too spoiled, and Ponyboy lost both of his parents. However they can’t seem to realize that everybody is struggling in one way or another.

“Neither of us had realized what it was doing to Soda to hear us fight. I was sick and cold with shame“
( 175 ).

On page 34 Ponyboy tells Cherry how Johnny got jumped by one of her friends. Then he tells her that he thinks all Socs are like that. Cherry knows better than to listen to him. She is the first character to realize that everybody is struggling. She tells Ponyboy that the Socs don’t have it as easy as the Greasers may think. To get Ponyboy to understand she asks him one question. Did you see that beautiful sunset last night?

“Maybe the 2 different worlds we live in aren’t so different. We saw the same sunset “
( 41 ).

In the Outsiders I believe that the author is trying to make us realize how much every kid in the story is alike. They are all struggling inside, and none of them can see that everybody else around them is struggling as well.
