PRESENTATION OUTLINE
1.
THE PATRIOT
Compared to actual events
2.
BENJAMIN MARTIN
Not a historical figure.
A combination of historical figures.
Represented the colonists' feelings toward England.
3.
THE BRITISH
Inaccuratly depicted as evil, one-dimensional villains.
Portrayed as the antagonist side in the film.
Didn't hold as much hate against the Americans as in the movie.
War was just their job.
4.
BURNING OF THE CHURCH
There is no factual evidence of this happening.
Not consistent with war methods at that time.
Added to the movie's evil portrayal of the English.
5.
COL. WILLIAM TAVINGTON
At the Burning of the Church
6.
THE PATRIOTS
Showed true dislike towards the Redcoats.
Personally affected by England's actions.
Showed "farmers with pitchforks" attitude.
The protagonist side in the film.
7.
THE BATTLE OF COWPENS
The man says, "It's October."
This battle was fought in January.
8.
BIASED TO THE PATRIOTS
Any story needs a protagonist and antagonist.
The movie made the English seem evil.
Made the Patriots seem to be on the good side.
9.
LOYALIST MAJORITY
Majority of colonists were actually loyalists (most of war).
The movie didn't show this.
The film showed the Patriots to be stronger than they were.
The Patriotic colonists did win the war, but not with ease.
10.
CONCLUSION
The film did make the viewer feel patriotic.
It was inaccurate and biased in some areas.
Further proves how Hollywood will exaggerate history.
