The Patristic Age

The Patristic Era (100-700 A.D.)

  • Patristic- adjective used to describe time after New Testament
  • -derived from the Greek word Pater, or father
  • Therefore, patristic age is the Age of the Church Fathers

FEATURES OF CHRISTIANITY

  • Holy book made from Jewish scripture and Christian writings
  • A theology of two basic theologies
  • Incarnation and Trinity
  • Incarnation-Son of God was both fully man and fully divine
  • Trinity- Three persons in one God

Features of Christianity(cont.)

  • Disagreements resulted in a split in the Church
  • The Great Schism
  • Divided into the Eastern Church(Greek) and the Western Church(Latin)
  • Split still noticeable today

CHURCH FATHERS of the time

CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA (d. 216)

  • Optimistic Vision of Life
  • Integrated the Gospel truth with the pagan world
  • Described a typical day of a Christian by the ethical challenges of the day
  • He does condemn pagan wisdom
  • Believed it comes straight from logos

Origen (d. 253)

  • in contrast to Clement, Origen had a negative view
  • Educated man in touch with pagan knowledge
  • First to use the concept of the cardinal virtues in Christian theology
  • His writings on sin, human freedom, and revelation reveal his pessimistic view

Ambrose of Milan (d. 397)

  • Bishop of Milan, Italy
  • Wrote De Officiis
  • Sought to articulate moral obligations and duties
  • work did not flourish untill 1300 years later

AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO (D. 430)
