THE WAR

  • The longest war in American history
  • Resulted in about 60,000 American deaths
  • Resulted in about 2 million Vietnamese deaths
  • Congress enacted the War Powers Act in 1973

WHY IT HAPPENED

  • Vietnam was divided to communist north
  • and into a anti-communist south
  • North Vietnam began to battle the South's government
  • The U.S. Sent troops to South Vietnam to aid them
  • China and USSR aided North Vietnam

DEATHS

THE PENTAGON PAPERS

  • The name given to a secret Department of Defense
  • In 1968 Daniel Ellsberg leaked the papers to the public
  • Ellsberg opposed the war and wanted it to be available to the public
  • He secretly photocopied the papers and sent it to the New York Times
  • It was a study of U.S. involvement from the end of WWII to present day
