In prior verses, leading up to Jesus' arrest, all four books of the Bible tells of Judas Iscariot that agreed to betray Jesus by handing him over to the chief priests to be murdered. In John 18:2 Judas Iscariot agreed to lead the chief priests to Jesus and identify him with a kiss on the cheek. In return, the chief priests gave Judas 30 pieces of silver.
Who was the perfect sacrifice? We are told of the story of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection and why this story is considered, "The Perfect Sacrifice". the body and blood of Jesus, because he was without sin, made an offering that satisfied God once and for all. By that perfect offering we are perfected and are being sanctified.
What were the events that led up to this moment? The Jewish high priests and elders of the Sanhedrin accused Jesus blasphemy, arriving at the decision to put him to death. So Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor in Judea. Although Pilate found him innocent unable to find a reason to condemn Jesus, he feared the crowds and let them decide Jesus' fate by offering up Barrabas. Stirred by the Jewish chief priests, the crowds declared, "Crucify him!" (Mark 15:1-15, Luke 23:21
Where did this take place? Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane (John 18) and taken before the high priest where Peter denied him three times. From there, Jesus was led to Pilates court. After Jesus was sentenced to death, "Then three soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around him, then they stripped Him and put A scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying "Hail, King of the Jews!" Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put his own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified." Matthew 27: 27-31
When did this happen? The time line suggests that Jesus' death took place in 1A.D. We have no information as to the exact month or day it happened. All the events took place in one day from the trail to his death. As Jesus was going to the Place of a Skull, Matthew,Mark and Luke also describe Simon of Cyrene bearing the cross, and the multitude mocking Jesus along the way.
Why did this have to happen? To satisfy the divine wisdom of God. The ransom. The atonement. Jesus' only crime was that he claimed to be the "King of the Jews" , and before he bowed his head and died, the soldiers divided his clothes. Matthew 27:45-46 states, "Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, My God, My God, why thou forsaken me?"
The perfect sacrifice of Jesus is made real in faithful observance of The Lord's supper each and every Lord's day. Perfection was what Jesus was in every way. To strive for it is what we must try to do. Be ye perfect as your father in Heaven is perfect.
