Summary: in the beginning of the story the narrator starts out in a room where he is being judged because he has committed a crime. He later wakes up in a dungeon and is forced to overcome obstacles and think threw things to escape each situation, he loses consciousness several times, and every time wakes up to a new challenge to overcome. At the end of the story he is saved by Lasalle (a French general). He took over the prison trying to stop the Spanish inquisition.

Conflict: the narrator is sentenced to death during the inquisition and cant seem to escape the prison in which they have captivated him in. every time he seems to be okay something else happens for him to stumble on (internal and external conflict).

Characters: The narrator is the only main character in the story. General Lasalle and the judges, are secondary characters but mean a lot to the story. the narrator is a protagonist (static) because he's trying to get out of the prison. General Lasalle is a protagonist (static) because he helps the narrator escape the prison. The antagonist in the story is the Inquisition its self and the people causing it.

Suspense: The author had a major suspense set in this story because every time you thought he was going to die something else happened and every time you thought he wasn't going to wake up he did. The story always made you want to get to the end because it felt like he led you on and on and on.

Foreshadowing: The story uses foreshadowing by the title being "The Pit and the Pendulum", considering that's how the narrator almost dies, also by anticipating that he was going to pass out again when he drunk or ate something, also the whole time the narrator has you on the edge of your chair, if you thought about it enough he has to be alive to tell his story.

Irony: Situational irony because you expect the narrator to die some way, you'd never expect him to live or be saved.

Theme: To scare you and make you think about yourself in the narrators shoes (that's why i believe the narrator doesn't have a name)
