Hello. I'm Richard Eno. I'm a a teacher of Film and other interesting things such as Media, Experimental Art and Leadership.

I'm here today to deliver a 15 minute class on how the Creative Arts are portrayed in the media. However, I've prepared an extended presentation to give you an idea of what we might talk about if we had an hour together.

Each slide should have a few notes and a link. My contact details are at the end so feel free to get in touch.

Unit 6
Critical Approaches

I've taught BTEC Creative Media Production several times and one of my favourite units is the one on Critical Approaches.

It's an interesting unit because the skills you gain can be applied to almost any subject.

Here is Stuart Hall on Representation and the Media. It's part one of four and you can find them all on YouTube.

ideology

  • Ideas
  • Values
  • Beliefs
Ideology is one of my favourite things to teach because we can relate it to absolutely everything.

Understanding ideology is one of the most valuable skills you can gain.

It's a really complicated idea so don't worry if you don't understand it straight away. I've been teaching it for 15 years and I still find things out!

You can find out a lot more at places like this:

La Gioconda by Leonardo da Vinci. Better known to you and me as the Mona Lisa!

Have you ever wondered why it is so famous? I mean, it's just a painting of a woman. Nothing special, right?

Check out this short article from Science Addict: http://www.scienceaddict.com/why-is-the-mona-lisa-painting-so-famous/

Classical Music. Strings, orchestras and people in suits and frocks. Why is it often considered more 'worthy' than say, pop music?

Have a look at here at debate.org to see what others say and to contribute yourself: http://www.debate.org/opinions/is-pop-music-inferior-to-classical-music

One Direction. 1D. Love them or hate there is no denying the immense popularity of these four British boys.

But why are they so popular? Is is really down to them being good-looking? Are we really that shallow? Actually, we might be. But I think there's something else to consider.

Part of their success is down to something we call in Media Studies as 'synergy'. Google it to find out more.

Try and not see four guys but instead look at them as a 'product' and a 'brand'. To really get your head around this you should check out Richard Dyer's Star Theory. It was mostly used to study movie stars but you can apply the basic premise to pop stars too.

This will be a good start: http://www.mediaknowall.com/as_alevel/Music/music.php?pageID=popstar

“Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow
of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy..."

We all know it but also don't know it. Hamlet, like so many of Billy Shakespeare's work has fallen into popular culture. So that means we have something which might blend high and low art together. What do you think?

If you think Shakespeare is all about blokes in leotards then you might be missing out on some terrific stories. For example, have you heard or seen the American series, 'Sons of Anarchy?' Well if you have seen it then you've also seen Hamlet. Because Sons of Anarchy has the exact storyline!

Ant and Dec. Britain's Got Talent. Simon Cowell. Extremely popular and very successful but also extremely mocked by the press and the public. Yet so many of us watch and consume their products. Why is that?

Talent shows have a very long history in Britain, and not just on television. Ask your parents and grandparents about Opportunity Knocks or New Faces!

Much of the success of Simon Cowell's TV career (and all the other talent-style shows) owe a lot to the history of the 'variety' shows and in theatre, the extremely popular Vaudeville. Google those terms and see what you can find out.

But that's a toilet! Well, yes, you're right. But is it art?

Think about it. It has been designed, constructed and marketed to an audience. Isn't that what we do when we make a film or painting?

why do we differentiate?

  • Popular Culture and the Hoi Polloi
  • Aristocracy and the Bourgeoisie
  • High Resolution vs Low Resolution

This is a book and TV show about how we 'see' art. You'll probable find it a little dated but the ideas behind it are still relevant. Ch-ch-check it out!

Here is my email so feel free to get in touch if you'd like discuss some of these ideas further.

I've also put some interesting links which you might like. The mandy.com one is great for Creative Media Production students looking for lo-to-no paid jobs.

The others are just sites I love and I think you might get something from them, too. They've all got Facebook and Twitter links.

Thank you for listening to me today and I hope to see you all again soon.
