Choosing Cabinet Members: appointed by the president, then confirmed by the senate. Although they can be rejected it is fairly rare.

For example, the most recent rejection occurred in 1989, when the Senate refused to confirm President George H.W. Bushs selection of John Tower as secretary of defense.

Cabinets role: Cabinet members have two major responsibilities. Individually, each is the administrative head of one of the executive departments. Collectively, they are advisors to the President.
