SOLVE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS

LEARNERS
# Notes

* "solve a practical problem over a period of several days or weeks"

* "A project allows learners to identify and formulate their own problems"

* "Learners have the opportunity to work more autonomously and build their knowledge."

* “The reason that Dewey, Papert, and others have advocated learning from projects rather than from isolated problems is, in part, so that students can face the task of formulating their own problems, guided on the one hand by the general goals they set, and on the other hand by the 'interesting' phenomena and difficulties they discover through their interaction with the environment” (Collins, Brown and Newman, 1989, p. 487)

GUIDE

THE INSTRUCTOR IS A
# Notes

* "the teacher has to design, to facilitate and to monitor student activities"

* "Project work focuses on applying, not imparting, specific knowledge or skills, and on improving student involvement and motivation in order to foster independent thinking, self-confidence, and social responsibility"

* "He (Kilpatrick) believed that the role of a teacher should be that of a "guide" as opposed to an authoritarian figure."

DIVIDE PROJECTS

INTO SUBPROBLEMS AND ACHIEVABLE TASKS
# Notes

* "...divide problems into sub-problems so that learners perform only one task at a time and that these tasks are flexible enough in order for learners to be able achieve them whatever their basic level"

* Amory outlines three important skills that learners get from project-based learning: open-ended problem solving, independent learning, and project management.

Skills

Great for helping learners develop certain
# Notes

* Amory outlines three important skills that learners get from project-based learning: open-ended problem solving, independent learning, and project management.
* People are primarily motivated by three things: autonomy, mastery, and purpose ([Dan Pink - Drive](http://www.danpink.com/books/drive))

KILPATRICK AND DEWEY

AND THE AMERICAN PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT
# Notes

* "William Heard Kilpatrick (November 20, 1871 – February 13, 1965) was an American pedagogue and a pupil, a colleague and a successor of John Dewey. He was a major figure in the progressive education movement of the early 20th century."

* "Kilpatrick developed the Project Method for early childhood education, which was a form of Progressive Education organized curriculum and classroom activities around a subject's central theme."

* "He believed that the role of a teacher should be that of a "guide" as opposed to an authoritarian figure."

* "Projects as a methodology are not a new concept; in the United States pioneers were John Dewey (Dewey, 1966) and William H. Kilpatrick (Kilpatrick, 1918)."

ANALYSIS - STRATEGY - EVALUATION

HOW DO INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN COMPONENTS FIT?
# Notes

* How does analysis apply to The Project Method? What are the most important considerations?

* What ID strategies work well with Project Based Learning? Where should more (or less) learner control be given?

* How can Project Based Learning best be evaluated?
