PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE QUAKE PROOF BRIDGE.

BY:MASON BROOKS, RUBY FERRETIZ, JAKE HALL.

THE PLAN
We're going to have an earthquake proof bridge from Haiti to Baracoa. The bridge will also come with an earthquake proof building that people crossing the bridge can take cover in.

Why we chose Baracoa and Haiti:
We chose these two locations for a very simple reason; we wanted to protect people from the earthquakes hitting Haiti and Baracoa, mostly Haiti though. In 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti.

Earthquake proof buildings:
Many buildings can be unsafe, as they are bricks or cement, but by connecting the roof, walls, and foundation to a box that can hold together when shaken, you can make it more stable.

Earthquake proof bridges:
This will be hard to build as a model, but if the model would be built in reality, the supports, which are made of steel, would have to include what you would call dampers on the inside. These dampers are hanging on the inside and when a tremor shakes the supports in one way, they shake in the opposite way to counteract the shake.

Quake proof bridge (cont.)
The bridge, which could possibly be extended by a few feet during the quake, would have to be backed up by some extra decking. The extra decking would also have to be measured precisely, as shown from information in the traffic light, or else the bridge could be a complete failure.

In conclusion, to build this model in reality you would need the dampeners and the other resources needed. The earthquake proof building would also have to be much more advanced. The earthquake proof building, which will be hard enough to build in a model, would have to be made life sized. The life sized bridge must also withstand another earthquake that could quite possibly hit Haiti in the next few years. Even more, the bridge would have to be the exact measurements to prevent it from collapsing.
