The raven steals the light

By: Filip  Origin: Native American
The raven steals the light is a native american myth. This myth talks about the creation of light, including stars, the moon and the sun. Therefore these traits make it a "creation myth".

Conflicts

  • Nature vs Nature
  • Nature vs Person
  • Society vs Person
  • Nature vs Nature
There are 4 main conflicts that I can think of but probably there are many more.

Raven vs Nature

The world was too dark and Raven was frustrated by this.
The first conflict I found in this story is a conflict between Raven and Nature. This conflict is presented at the beginning of the story where Raven is mad at the world for being very dark so dark that he couldn't see where he was flying and was occasionally bumping into other thinks while flying. This made him very frustrated.

Raven vs Old Man

Raven knows that one old Man holds the light that the world is missing.
There was a major conflict between the Raven and the old Man. This conflict was always with the Raven because he knew that there was one old Man who kept the light of the world in a boxes, the pursue to end the conflict really started when the Raven was bumbling around and got close to the home of the old Man. He heard him talking about his boxes and the light that his greedy mind kept away from the world. So that's when the Raven tried to resolve the conflict. The old Man wasn't aware of any conflict between him and the Raven until the end of the story when he actually sees who the Raven is and when the Raven steals his light to share with the world.

Society vs Old Man

Society is against one old Man who possesess the light of the world
Even though not all of Society knew about this old Man who has the light of the world, there is still a conflict between Society and the old Man, even if some are not aware of it.

Raven vs Eagle

When the Raven exposed light to the world an eagle saw him and attacked
This conflict is a smaller conflict in the story. This conflict occurs near the end of the story when the Raven takes hold of the light and gives it to the world. Since now all Nature and people can see a eagle quickly sees the Raven and attacks. This attack cusses the Raven to drop some of the light creating Stars and the moon.

Characters

  • The Raven
  • The old Man
  • The daughter

The Raven

Main character, Protagonist and Hero
The Raven is the main character, Protagonist and Hero of the story. The Raven holds the archetype "hero" in this story because he gave the world light. The Raven also shows many traits. For example the Raven shows a trait of intelligence. He shows this by making a very smart plan on how to get the light from the old Man. The Raven also shows a trait of braveness. He shows this by being brave enough to even try to steal the light from the old Man. Finally he shows a trait of being a trickster. He shows this by tricking the old Man into eventually giving him the light in which the Raven escapes with.

Old Man

The old Man is the story shows as the antagonist and rebel.
The old Man in the story is also a very important character. He is the antagonist and rebel of the story. I think that he is in fact the antagonist and rebel of the story because he kept all light to himself and didn't want anyone to take his light, even his own daughter. The old Man in the story also shows different traits. Firstly he shows that he is greedy. He does this by keeping the light to himself and only himself. He also shows a trait of loving. He shows this when he was playing with the Ravenchild.

Daughter

The daughter has a small role in the story. She only shows a trait of Ditz.
The daughter of the old Man has a small role in the story. She is the one that got the Raven into their house. She doesn't show many traits except maybe a trait of ditz(dumb blond). She shows this by just being zoned out by everything that was happening around her. Like when the Raven took the light and flew off she just stood there watching and didn't even say a word.

Modified hero's journey

Ordinary World

Raven lives in his ordinary world. A world with no light.
Raven and all Nature live in there ordinary world which as they know it is very dark.

Call to adventure

The Raven finds where the old Man lives and is starts planning his attack.
While bumbling around, the Raven hears the voice of the old Man talking about his boxes and the box which holds the light. This old Man's voice was the Ravens "call to adventure". The Raven quickly starts to plan his attack.

Crossing the first threshold

The Ravens plan succeeds and he finds a way into the house of the old Man
The Raven faced an obstacle (a wall) to enter the old Man's house. So he made a plan to turn into a pine needle so the daughter can swallow him when she goes to get water. His plan succeeded and he entered the old Man's house.

Tests,allies and enemies

The Raven faces a test to get the light from the old Man.
The Raven gets into the old Man's house. But now he faces many tests. First of all he must get out of the daughters stomach. Then he must take the light from the old Man.

Approach

The Raven becomes a child of the daughter. Now he must try to get the light
The daughter of the old Man gave birth to the Raven. The old Man now thinks that the child is actually his grandson. The Ravenchild begins to pursue the old Man in showing him the boxes which hold the box of light.

Reward

The ravenchild pursues the old Man to give him the light.
The Ravenchild pursues the old Man to let him hold the light. At first the old Man does not let him hold the light, but then eventually gives the light to him.

The road back

with the reward the Raven must now escape the house.
Since the Raven now has the reward he must leave the house of the old Man. So the Raven quickly puts the ball of light in his mouth, returns back to bird form and flies out of chimney.

Resurrection

Finally has the light but is chased by eagle.
As the Raven gets out of the chimney, light begins to come to earth. An eagle spots the Raven and begins to attack him. The Raven which can now see dodges the eagle but drops about half of the ball of light. This half shatters and become the moon and the stars.

Return with the elixir

The Raven returns safely to his ordinary world but now with light.
The raven escapes the eagle safely and he has fully accomplished his goal to bring light to his world.

Theme Statement

Being greedy can hurt others and eventually hurt yourself.

Theme statement

The old Man was greedy with the light and did not want the world to have it

Theme statement

This act hurt others because they had to work in the dark.
All of Nature was in the Dark because of the old Man`s greed.

Theme statement

When the Raven took the light, the old Man felt hurt.
The Raven took the light from the old Man and his own greed hurt him. But hopefully he learned his lesson.
