PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The Reformation In England
England remained Catholic for over 80 years after the Gutenberg Bible was printed
Henry VIII was the second monarch in the Tudor Dynasty
He marries Catherine of Aragon in 1509
They have a daughter named Mary
Henry VIII became worried about instability after Catherine could not produce a male heir
Henry said his marriage was "blighted in the eyes of God" because Catherine was previously married to his brother
So he asked for an annulment (divorce) from Pope Clement V
To complicate things: Catherine's nephew was Charles V: King of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor
Henry VIII asks parliament to pass laws limiting the Church's power in England
He secretly marries Anne Boleyn in 1533
Passes Act of Supremacy: English subjects took oath recognizing divorce and Henry as the Head of the Church of England
Anne and Henry VIII have another daughter: Elizabeth
Henry VIII still has no son...
and he decides to behead Anne Boleyn
He then marries Jane Seymour (his favorite)
Henry VIII marries 3 more time after
He remains a "devout" Catholic throughout his reign, although he is head of a (protestant) Church of England
Henry VIII dies; Edward VI becomes king at 10 (has a "Protectorate")
Edward VI
- Continues spread of protestantism
- Book of Common Prayer introduced (in English)
- Imprisons Catholic Bishops
Edward dies at 15; his sister Mary takes over
Queen Mary
- VERY Catholic (remember her mother was from Spain and Catholic)
- Re-establishes Catholicism in England
- Marries Prince Phillip of Spain
- Burns about 300 protestants to death
- Known as "Bloody Mary"
Mary dies in 1558, Elizabeth I becomes queen
Queen Elizabeth
- Raised Protestant, re-establishes Protestantism
- Creates a formal and separate Anglican church
- Super tolerant of both Protestants and Catholics
- Defeats the Spanish Armada and King Phillip II
