ChILDHOOD

  • Leo lived in the Renaissance time period
  • He was a lonely boy
  • Born in Italy
  • When he was 2, his parents left Leonardo to his grandparents.
  • The only person that loved him was his Uncle Francesco

FAST FACTS

  • Leonardo was also an engineer and scientist
  • He built a bicycle that actually might have worked -300 years BEFORE the first bike
  • Leonardo was born near a town called Vinci, so his name means "Leonardo from Vinci"

COLORS OF THE WIND-OR IN THIS CASE, PAINT

  • Instead of using oil-based paint, the Italians used egg-based paint
  • The blue paint was made of crushed lapis lazuli stone
  • The red paint was made of poor innocent beetles
  • And the yellow paint was made of a buckberry's juice

  • April 15, 1452 - He was born
  • 1478 - The Annunciation is completed
  • 1483 - Leo paints Virgin of the Rocks
  • 1498 - The Last Supper is completed
  • 1503 - He is requested to paint the Mona Lisa
  • 1507 - Leo finishes the Mona Lisa
  • May 2, 1519 - Leonardo Da Vinci dies

Leo (that's his official nickname I'm giving him, he doesn't have a say in the matter) created the Mona Lisa, which was actually meant for a king to own, but it was so beautiful, Leo decided to keep it.

Leo actually tried to make a robot baby!! It turned out really bad... (shudder, shudder)

MORE FACTS!!!

  • When he was 12, Leo was an apprentice for Andrea del Verrocchio.
  • In 7 to 8 years, Leo knew how to paint frescoes*, make sculptures out of bronze, marble, silver, gold, copper, clay, and stone and to paint realistically.
  • The Milan king wanted Leo to make a giant horse statue to honor his father
  • *Frescoes are pictures painted straight onto a wall

*Frescoes are paintings done straight onto walls. No sketches, just a fresh coat of paint. Graffiti is kinda like frescoes.

  • Leonardo's paintings were unfinished. Only about 15 were finished
  • Leonardo created the Mona Lisa, which is actually the most famous painting in the world!
  • Leo never really trusted people, so he never got married or had kids.
  • Leo died in France!!
