The Respiratory System

By: Stephanie Brown

The respiratory system consists of ten main parts:

  • nasal cavity
  • pharynx
  • larynx
  • trachea
  • carina

Untitled Slide

  • bronchi
  • lungs
  • bronchioles
  • alveoli
  • diaphragm

The Nasal Cavity

  • Filters and warms the air as it enters the respiratory system

The Pharynx

  • Air travels through the pharynx to the larynx

The Larynx

  • Continues to transport air and houses the vocal cords

The Trachea

  • Ringed cartilage that contains mucus to further filter the air

The Carina

  • Where the trachea branches into the right and left bronchi

The Bronchi

  • The left and right bronchi carry air to the lungs

The Bronchioles

  • Transport air to the alveoli

The Alveoli

  • Gas exchange occurs in the capillary bed of the alveoli

The Diaphragm

  • Principle muscle of the respiratory system that contracts to pull air into the lungs and relaxes to push air out of the lungs
