  • allowed Rome to conquer land
  • quickly and effectively

Ambition

  • Roman military leaders were
  • constantly conquering new
  • territory, giving Rome
  • immense wealth and
  • influence

PUNIC WARS

  • The Punic Wars ended with
  • the destruction of Carthage
  • making Rome the strongest
  • naval force in the
  • Mediterranean

Internal Unrest

  • Soldiers bgan to be loyal to
  • their generals not the state.
  • Slaves were revolting
  • and killing their masters.

JULIUS CEASER

  • Attempted to rule Rome
  • unofficially for his own
  • benefit.
  • Caused a civil war to avoid
  • standing trial for consulship.

PAX ROMANA

  • 200 years of peace when
  • Romans advanced culturally
  • and technologically.
  • The wealthy Romans were
  • oppressing the poor with taxes.

TETRARCHY

  • Rome was divided into two
  • empires and ruled by four
  • kings

RELIGION

  • Emperor Constantine
  • legalized Christianity,
  • shifting power away from
  • the emperor
