  • However the national park is in the northern central part of Colorado

ROCKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

THIS IS A MAP OF THE NATIONAL PARK IN COLORADO

HISTORY OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS

  • First inhabited by Native American tribe called the Utes
  • Was explored by fur trappers and Spanish adventurers
  • First acquired by the US during the Louisiana Purchase
  • 1859, Pikes peak gold rush lead to prospectors and speculators
  • Signed as a national park by Wodrow Wilson in January 26th, 1915

NATURE IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS

  • Provides a natural habitat for many endangered species
  • Some include the Boreal Toad, Mexican Spotted Owl, and the Canada Lynx
  • The park also houses numerous types of elk and deer
  • Many bighorn sheep can be found going to mineral licks
  • The rare occasional moose sighting can be seen in the park

THINGS TO DO

  • Cross country skiing and snow shoeing are common when there is snow
  • Wildlife viewing is also common all year round
  • Scenic drives are common all throughout the park
  • Backcountry camping and hiking can be done in the park
  • Weddings are actually hosted in the Rocky Mountains
