You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.
Genesis 2:17

ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE

  • sin and death entered
  • good gifts became gods
  • our lives were shattered
  • our relationships were fractured
  • our relationship to God was severed

The moment you have a self at all, there is a possibility of putting yourself first—wanting to be the centre —wanting to be God, in fact. That was the sin of Satan: and that was the sin he taught the human race.

What Satan put into the heads of our remote ancestors was the idea that they could ‘be like gods’— could set up on their own as if they had created themselves—be their own masters— invent some sort of happiness for themselves outside God, apart from God.
--C.S. Lewis

Sin inserts me into the middle of my universe, the one place reserved for God and God alone.

If we are ultimate rulers, we will naturally expect others to bow to our authority...and regularly be frustrated when they don’t listen to us.

If the essence of sin is dethroning God, then the essence of repentance is dethroning ourselves.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Matt 11:28-30
