In an Article “Feeling Guilty? Good: Believe it or not, guilt does serve a purpose.” By Shari Roan argues that guilt plays a major role in the development of morality. She believes the feeling of guilt can act positively for individuals. However, “Cultural stereotypes believe that guilt is a waste or a worthless emotion and that there isn't a point in feeling guilty. But in reality, guilt does serve a positive purpose.

In the aspect of relationships with family, friends, and significant others, the sense of guilt is positive. Researchers found that guilt serves three main functions : to maintain relationships, to exert influence, and to redistribute emotional stress. An example that guilt is beneficial is shown when people do not spend time with their family or loved ones. In this aspect, guilt is a big force to make us more aware of our loved ones and to give them needed attention.

In comparison to “The Scarlet Letter” guilt is exemplified in a positive way shown through Hester as she’s determined to keep her daughter, Pearl. Hester argues that she will teach her a valuable lesson.

Finally, she argues that guilt can redistribute emotions. It is a way of showing that one cares. The root of guilt consists of empathy (feeling bad when someone is hurting). Even though guilty emotions may do good, people hate to feel it. We oftentimes try to avoid it, but we shouldn’t because it teached us valuable lessons.

In comparison to the “Scarlet Letter” Hester is begging Dimmesdale to sticks up for her. Out of sympathy and wisdom, he speaks that Pearl is a blessing that God gave her to help overcome her past.

In conclusion: As depicted in “The Scarlet Letter” guilt normally arises from the opinions of others around us. Over time we adapt it consciously or unconsciously by our thought and actions. In our youth, we are constantly reminded of our negative behaviors but the guilt is intended to change the way we behave and shape us from doing wrong.
