Mary Lennox: a spoiled rude and badtempered 10 year old girl from India and comes to live with her uncle in England and develops through the story
Colin Craven: the son of Archibald Craven that has been contained because of his illness and resemblance to his late mother. At first gloomy and sad but turns into a happy cheerful boy by the end
Mary Lennox was sent to live with her uncle in England when a disease killed many people where she lived in India. Once she is there, her days are spent playing in the Moor outside her uncle's house. A gardener, Ben, who works on the moor and tells Mary about a secret garden that is hidden in the moor that was owned by his uncle's late wife
Mary becomes curious and seeks out for the secret garden. She finds a key hidden in the ground and soon finds the door. She spends her days in the garden getting exercise and becoming less tempered. She hears crying through her uncle's house but the maids deny it. She goes looking for the cries and finds a boy her age named Colin who is her cousin and has a spinal illness
Mary,Colin and her maidservant Martha's brother Dickon play about in the garden trying to help Colin regain his strength and heal him of his illness. When Ben refers to Colin as a "poor cripple" he becomes furious and stands from his wheelchair and walks. Colin becomes healthier and surprises his dad when he comes home
I think the conflict in this story is between Colin and his illness. When Colin was ill he said he would become like his dad and be a "hunchback" or "cripple" so he was always doubting himself. When Ben accused him, he challenged his illness and started walking and getting better and better until he was healthy. He faced himself and instead of being like his dad, he choose to not live that life and choose for himself what he truly wanted to be
I think the theme in The Secret Garden is the importance of love and friendship. When Colin was sick, no one was there for him besides the maidservants who took care of him, he didn't have anyone to talk to or love. The same goes for Mary. Before she met Colin, Dickon, or Martha she was bitter and arrogant but both Colin and Mary changed when they found each other and their friends
