What is a seismometer

• It detects seismic movements (earthquakes)
• The first one was invented by Zheng Heng
• It was able to detect past people and animals walking by
• It was invented in 132 A.D.

Why was it so important?

• China is a very seismically active place
• It saved many lives
• There were a lot of people in danger
• They could evacuate long before it happens

How does it work?

• Slight shakes would displace a lever, pushing the ball out
• It would fall into a toad's mouth, telling which way it's coming

My reaction

• I didn't even know seismometers existed
• They were so advanced for 132 A.D.
