THE SISTERS OF MERCY

History

The Sisters of Mercy was founded by Catherine McAuley in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland. It was founded because Catherine noticed the people in poverty around her and she and women like her wanted to make a difference.

The Sisters of Mercy in America

The Sisters were invited to America by the Bishop of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. From 1843-1854, the Sisters had sites in New York City, Chicago, Little Rock, and San Francisco. Today the have over 100 sites worldwide.

The Role in the Catholic Church

The Sisters of Mercy also contributed to the Church in America. They provided education, religious, and social services to poor women and children. The Sisters still work today all around the world in educating poor women.
