CATHERINE MCAULEY

Founder of the Sisters of Mercy

On September 24, 1827 the first House of Mercy was founded in Dublin, Ireland

A place for the shelter and education of women

Three years later on December 12,1831 the Sisters of Mercy was officially formed

Catherine McAuley's intention was to educate and help young women by forming a group of Catholic social workers. This later turned into the religious order we know today.

Sisters of Mercy came to America in 1843 at the invitation of the Bishop of Pittsburgh, Bishop O'Reilly

They came to educate and help the sick and those economically poor.
They first started in Providence, RI, but by the year 1854 the Sisters of Mercy were located in all major cities of the U.S.

The Sisters of Mercy played a huge part in the education of Catholics in the U.S.

Through their kind works and openness to helping everyone, people saw Catholics in a better light and Catholicism spread quicker

This work is still present in America and throughout the rest of the world! The Sisters of Mercy have contributed to many schools such as Salve Regina University and Xavier University

TRADITIONAL HABITS

This is what the traditional Sisters of Mercy would wear

Now, the Sisters of Mercy we see today are just like everyone else. They wear regular clothes and even may be your teacher or friend.

The most insightful thing I learned about the Sisters of Mercy has contributed and founded over 50 schools. They have extremely increased the amount of education in America
