What is a bone made of?

It is mostly made up of a composite material incorporating the mineral calcium phosphate in the chemical arrangement termed calcium hydroxylapatite (this is the osseous tissue that gives bones their rigidity) and collagen, an elastic protein which improves fracture resistance.

Factors that strengthen the bone

Some of the factors are:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin D

How does Vitamin D help the bone?

It does so by helping the body absorb calcium (one of bone's main building blocks) from food and supplements. People who get too little vitamin D may develop soft, thin, and brittle bones, a condition known as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
