  • Founded in 1880 under British rule
  • Diverse culture
  • 1 million people in 535 acres

  • Dharavi hosts many different jobs
  • Work conditions in some jobs can be awful
  • Exports goods and textiles all over the world
  • Many jobs are available, most people work with low pay
  • Total annual turnover $500 million (US)

  • Very diverse
  • Many religions
  • Proud of their Dharavi heritage
  • Want to keep Dharavi; fight those that want it bulldozed
  • Believe in honest work and education for the next generation

  • Living conditions are abysmal
  • Jobs such as "ragpicking" are brutal
  • Not enough water and electricity
  • Too many people in a small space
  • Disease is very common
