What is smallpox?

  • An infectious disease caused by the Variola virus

Symptoms

  • fever/lethargy
  • headache, sore throat, vomiting
  • raised rash
  • sores inside mouth, throat, nose
  • fluid filled postules

Results

1) one in every three people die after 2 weeks of exposure
2) survivors: permanent scarring
3) deformities: loss of lip, nose, ear tissue, blindness due to corneal scarring

How is smallpox contracted?

  • Spread through close contact with sores
  • Virus can also spread through the air
  • Person remains infectious until last scab is separated
