Plantations and small farms

  • Big plantations were similar to small villages 
  • Plantation workers were normally slaves
  • Had different workers for different jobs 
  • Most colonists lived on small farms
  • People on small farms grew their own food

family life

  • The wealthier the easier the life you had
  • Boys spent time outside girls learned inside
  • Backcountrty farmers had a harder lifestyle 
  • Their kids helped on farmers 
  • Their parents also taught them to read 

Southern Slavery

  • 1600's indentured servants worked in feilds
  • 1750 more slaves were being bought  
  • More plantations grew the more people got slaves

life under slavery

  • Slaves were treated as property
  • On plantations they were laborers  
  • Often were whipped to get working 
  • There were laws to keep slaves from running away 
  • They could get beaten or killed by owner

African American culture

  • Slaves had close bonds with each other 
  • Helped each other survive harsh owners 
  • Many practiced Christianity 
  • They created a culture mix of American and African religion 
  • They often played music or sang while they worked
