THE SOUTH WEST

GEOGRAPHY

  • Northern Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico, south Colorado and Utah, western Texas
  • Sonora Desert, the Colorado Plateau, some of Rocky Mts, San Juan Mts, Eastern Plains
  • Temperature ranges: 44 (winter) to 105 (summer)
  • Usually pretty dry and hot

EFFECT ON DAILY LIFE

  • Farming was not main way of life
  • Geography for protection
  • Exploiting
  • following animal herds
  • Settled near water

PRE COLOMBIAN TIME

  • In pit dwellings (partially underground)- due to heat of desert
  • Lived on cliffs or canyons for protection
  • Developed a ceremonial chamber from living room of pit dwellings
  • Cultivated corn, beans, squash, cotton, and tobacco
  • Traded cotton textiles and corn for buffalo meat from nomadic tribes

CONTINUED

  • Pueblo, Hopi, Uto-Aztecan, Apache
  • Had a pastoral
  • Agriculture highest of area
  • Made baskets and pottery
  • Hunted with spears

POST COLOMBIAN TIME

  • Became fierce fighters
  • Turned to raiding
  • Stole goods and livestock- sold
  • Physically tough

CONTINUED

  • Pueblo Revolt- 1680
  • 1848- Forced into reservations
  • Many died of disease
