THE SOUTHERN COLONIES

The Southern Colonies includes 5 of the 13 colonies: Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

VIRGINIA

  • Created in 1607
  • First permanent English colony in North America
  • Houses included thatched roofs.
  • Built around disease swamp and mosquitos

MARYLAND

  • Founded in 1632
  • Lord Baltimore was the proprietor.
  • Made for catholics
  • In an inn in Maryland, indentured servants and slaves worked there.

NORTH CAROLINA

  • North Carolina's Roanoke Island was there where colonists dissapeared
  • They best trades were tobacco, furs, and forest products.
  • Founded 1584

SOUTH CAROLINA

  • Created in 1663
  • Small farms from the start
  • Crops were rice and indigo
  • First town was Charlston

GEORGIA

  • Founded 1732
  • Only colony developed in 1700's
  • James Oglethrope was the founder
  • Fort Frederica was made out of shells called tabby

Indigo

Indigo was used to dye clothes dark blue.Eliza Pickney experimented different indigos to create a faster growing indigo.

Southern Colonies

•Crops were rice tobacco and indigo

Slavery

•Slaves blended African and American religions and sang songs to pass time
